What you need to know about peanut and nut free ice cream

According to the nationwide AllerGen survey close to 169,000 Canadian children are allergic to peanuts, while 112,000 have a tree nut allergy. As for Canadian adults, almost 197,000 are allergic to peanuts and 337,000 have a tree nut allergy.

That’s a lot of Canadians who need to pay close attention to the food they eat.
With public schools, daycares, sports clubs, community centres and other public places introducing nut free policies, it’s estimated that more than 30% of the Canadian population is now nut conscious.

“The demand for nut-free products is growing as Canadians respond to the need for nut-free environments,” says Chapman’s president, Penny Chapman.

Inspired by a little boy who wanted to have ice cream at his birthday party, Chapman’s was among the first in Canada to produce ice cream and frozen treats that are guaranteed peanut and nut free. And that commitment continues today.

Chapman’s built a separate facility – with a separate loading dock – exclusively for our peanut and nut free products, staffed by a dedicated workforce that is educated about the importance of ensuring nothing nutty enters the facility. We’ve also worked hard to find suppliers who are as committed to guaranteeing the safety of their products as we are.

“One of the challenges of nut-free manufacturing is finding nut free suppliers you can rely on,” notes Chapman. “There are very few in Canada.”
And just to make sure that we never miss something, Chapman’s works with an outside lab to run analysis on all our incoming ingredients and finished products.

We’re proud to offer Canadian consumers a wide selection of peanut and nut free frozen treats, including our Original Ice Cream line, Lolly’s, Twisters, Sorbets and Supers line of novelties. And while not all our products are nut free, we make our peanut and nut free selections easy to identify. Just look for our ‘Red Flag’ labelling!

At Chapman’s, we think every Canadian should be able to enjoy a worry-free scoop of delicious ice cream. Our efforts have been recognized by Anaphylaxis Canada for our commitment to allergy safety. Now that’s something we can all feel good about.
