Title: Waste Treatment Plant Operator
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Chief Engineer
Job Summary:
The Waste Treatment Plant Operator is responsible to run the equipment, control the processes, and monitor the processes that treat the water. They must have a high level of mechanical aptitude. This position requires excellent communication, negotiating, team orientation and problem-solving skills.
Summary of Essential Job Functions:
- Operate and monitor computerized control systems and related equipment in wastewater treatment, and liquid waste plants to regulate the flow of waste through settling, aeration and digestion tanks, and to treat and dispose of sludge and wastes
- Monitor and inspect plant equipment and systems to detect equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant systems are operating normally
- Patrol plant to check pumps, motors, filters, and other plant equipment; monitor and read gauges, meters and other recording instruments to detect equipment malfunctions and ensure plant systems and equipment are operating within prescribed limits
- Test and adjust chemical feed rates to ensure that processes meet quality standards
- Collect waste samples, test and analyze results and make adjustments to plant equipment and systems as required
- Complete and maintain plant logs, reports and statistics
- May measure, mix and transport chemicals to maintain feed stocks
- Perform preventive maintenance on plant equipment to ensure that the facility operates in accordance with required standards
- May assist skilled tradespersons with installation and repair of plant machinery
- Clean and maintain plant, equipment, tanks, filter beds, and other work areas
- Ensure safety standards are met
- Provide feedback to the Chief Engineer and/or Maintenance Manager on WTP performance and equipment issues
- Maintain UF and RO systems recycling program
- CIP the UF and RO systems to maintain performance
- Sludge removal is a daily job
- Perform all other duties as assigned or needed
Position Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Waste/Water Treatment certificate/diploma or a minimum five years’ experience in Waste/Water Treatment or similar role
- Knowledge of chemicals and their uses
- High level of mechanical aptitude, plumbing experience is an asset
- Forklift, Elevated Work Platform and Power Worker certified operator preferred
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to create logically ordered objectives
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Excellent basic mathematical skills
- UF and RO experience with water recycling would be an asset
- Basic electrical knowledge of 600V systems
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Good manual dexterity
- Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
- Average weekly hours of 42.5
- Potential dangers involved with mechanical work and repair
- Potential dangers working with and dispensing chemicals
- Working in a wet environment
- Overtime as required

Pay: This is an hourly role starting at $35 to $43 per hour.
