The Hanley Institute, a local charitable organization, reached out to nearby communities and local businesses, expressing concerns about its ability to continue operating due to insufficient funds. In response to this urgent appeal, Chapman’s Ice Cream stepped forward and pledged a five-year commitment of $25,000 annual contributions, a total of $125,000.
Located in Flesherton, Ontario, The Hanley Institute is a registered charity dedicated to supporting youth aged 12 and up throughout Grey County. With more than 100 students coming through their doors weekly, the Institute provides a variety of programs designed to foster life skills and build strong minds through connection, education, compassion, and empowerment.
Founded by Jenny Hanley in 2019, the organization offers an array of after-school programs, camps, and workshops. It also provides one-on-one educational sessions covering important topics such as anxiety, anger management, substance use, addiction, sex, suicide, and self-esteem. Through these services, the Institute equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make positive life choices and navigate challenges they may face. Students are also playing a big part in the local community, from making and delivering gifts to the local nursing home to making mats for the homeless.
“As a company we always try to support our community where it matters the most and we are proud to be able to support The Hanley Institute,” said Ashley Chapman, COO of Chapman’s, “Teenage years are often defining in people’s lives. The guidance and support that the Institute offers to our youth is essential for many, and there are no other programs in the area that provide such support.”
The majority of the funds contributed by Chapman’s will be allocated towards essential operational expenses, such as hydro and necessary building repairs. The Institute hopes to continue its fundraising efforts to be able to provide daily healthy snacks to children after school and continue its wide range of programs.
“There are many increasing challenges faced by non-profit organizations in today’s environment. As the number of non-profits continues to rise, more groups are competing for the same pool of government funding. While community members remain generous, their capacity to donate and support multiple organizations is being stretched thinner each year,” said Jenny Hanley, the founder of The Hanley Institute. “We deeply appreciate Chapman’s support that will allow us to keep going and so what we love.”
Helen Usdenski, a local community member, noted “The Hanley Institute is a cornerstone for the future of our community – our children. It’s where they can learn new skills – whether it’s baking, chess, sawing, music or something they never imagined trying. As a parent, knowing our youth have a place like this fills me with hope for their future and pride in our community.”
